Carnival Week in Madeira

It’s party time in Madeira again this month as the island explodes into life as the annual carnival season gets underway.
The main event is the great carnival parade that will once again set the streets of the island's capital Funchal ablaze on Saturday the 9th of February (starting at 9pm) with a seemingly endless chain of magnificent floats filing their way through the city throughout the evening, each with its own unique carnival theme.
The programme culminates with a Mardi Gras-style fun parade known locally as the Slapstick Cortege (Cortejo Trapalhão) at 4pm the following afternoon of Shrove Tuesday (12th of February), in which more than 3,000 people will take part.
Carnival in Madeira is an enormous spectacle which floods the main streets of Funchal with music and continuous entertainment, along with a succession of spin-off activities to entertain the tourists such as street theatre, concerts and exhibitions.
