More Blue Flags for Portugal

Portugal's beaches have been granted 277 Blue Flags for the 2013 bathing season, two more than last year.
The number of beaches allowed to fly the quality flag remains stable throughout the country, showing a good level of consistency across the regions.
The coveted Blue Flag is only awarded to beaches that adhere to a strict regime of water quality management, environmental control, safety procedures, extensive signposting and efficient support services.
Roughly a rectangle in shape, Portugal is renowned for its long, golden beaches which attract millions of tourists every year.
The country boasts some 850 km of sandy coastline, with a temperate climate that’s simultaneously Atlantic and Mediterranean, allowing for cooler breezes during the summer and warmer conditions in winter, which are ideal for sailing, windsurfing and other types of the many water sports that are popular on Portugal’s beaches.
