The new Portugal and Spain Michelin guide for 2013 includes eleven of Portugal's top restaurants, including the newly-starred Belcanto in Lisbon.
The Ocean and Vila Joya restaurants in the Algarve were both awarded two Michelin stars, while eight other fine dining establishments maintained their single Michelin star status, namely Willie’s in Vilamoura (Algarve), São Gabriel and Henrique Reis (both in Almancil, Algarve), Il Gallo d’Oro (Funchal, Madeira), Casa da Calçada (Amarante, northern Portugal), Yeatman (Porto, northern Portugal), Feitoria (Lisbon) and Fortaleza do Guincho (Cascais, Lisbon Coast).
The rising star of Portugal's top-end restaurant scene, however, is Belcanto in Lisbon headed by chef José Avillez, which has received a Michelin star for the very first time.
“This star is the result of a lot of hard work and dedication. We favour quality in our restaurant and our aim is not to chase after stars but to ensure that our clients have the best possible experience,” said Avillez in response to the announcement.
